Welcome to the Island

World Heritage listed, Magnetic Island lies right in the middle of the Great Barrier Reef. It is within the Tropic of Capricorn and enjoys over 300 days of sunshine a year. It is unique – it is the only one of the Great Barrier Reef Islands that has a permanent community living on the Island, hence, holidaying on Magnetic means that you are not completely surrounded by other visitors, and you can get to meet with the locals!

The island is 8kms off the Australian mainland coast from Townsville and there are both frequent passenger ferry and vehicle barge services every day. The Island is entirely within the World Heritage Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and 55% is National Park. Florence Bay

Nelly Bay Our community lives in four distinct villages, Picnic Bay,  Nelly Bay, Arcadia  and Horseshoe Bay.  While each bay has a character and attractions of its own, each has gently sloping sandy beaches, magnificent views either out to the Coral Sea, across to Cape Cleveland, or back to the sparkling lights of Townsville at night.
Each bay has its own shops, convenience stores, cafés and restaurants.  There is a superb supermarket with an excellent deli section, butchery and fresh fish supplies.  The café and restaurant choice covers Mediterranean, Mexican, Chinese, Australian, Tropical, as well as superb fish and chips (straight from the Reef) and a range of cafés and light meals. Horseshoe Bay
